Bulgaria has set a new record in citizenship approvals, granting 16,268 individuals Bulgarian citizenship in 2024, marking a 33.3% increase compared to 2023, when 12,205 people were naturalized. This significant surge reflects Bulgaria’s growing role as a destination for individuals seeking European residency and citizenship.

•Albania: 1,328 people

•Serbia: 847 people

•Russia: 474 people

•Israel: 260 people

•Syria: 150 people

•Argentina: 108 people

The remaining citizenships were granted to individuals from 56 different countries, including 38 EU member states, further emphasizing Bulgaria’s appeal as a gateway to Europe.

How Did Applicants Qualify for Bulgarian Citizenship?

Bulgaria grants citizenship through multiple routes, including:

1.Bulgarian Descent: Many recipients proved Bulgar ancestry, making them eligible for naturalization.

2.Naturalization: Foreign nationals who have lived in Bulgaria for an extended period or contributed to society were granted citizenship.

3.Citizenship by Merit: 18 individuals received Bulgarian citizenship based on their exceptional achievements in culture and sports.

4.Reinstated Citizenship: 4,490 people regained their Bulgarian nationality after previously renouncing it.

Citizenship Revocations and Rejections

While thousands were approved, not all applicants succeeded in their quest for Bulgarian citizenship.

•38 individuals had their citizenship revoked due to fraudulent claims, including criminal record concealment and forged documents.

•5,946 applicants were denied, with reasons ranging from incomplete documentation to posing national security or public order concerns.

These figures demonstrate Bulgaria’s rigorous due diligence process, ensuring that only eligible and law-abiding individuals receive citizenship.

Yusuf Boz’s Insights on Bulgaria’s Citizenship Surge

Investment migration expert Yusuf Boz shared his perspective on Bulgaria’s growing appeal:

“Bulgaria’s rising citizenship approvals reflect its importance as a strategic entry point to the European Union. With visa-free Schengen access on the horizon, demand for Bulgarian citizenship will likely continue to rise.”

Boz also emphasized the growing interest from Turkish investors and business professionals:

“With increasing restrictions on Golden Visa programs in Western Europe, many investors are now looking at Bulgaria as a cost-effective alternative for gaining EU residency and citizenship.”

What’s Next for Bulgaria’s Citizenship Program?

Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, Bulgaria’s citizenship trends suggest:

•Continued high demand, especially from neighboring countries seeking EU benefits.

•Potential policy adjustments to manage the rising number of applications.

•A stronger appeal for foreign investors, given Bulgaria’s low cost of living, favorable tax policies, and EU access.

As Bulgaria refines its citizenship policies, experts predict more foreign investors and skilled professionals will explore this route for securing long-term European residency.

Bulgaria’s Growing Appeal for Citizenship Seekers

Bulgaria’s record-breaking 16,268 new citizenship approvals in 2024 underscore its position as an attractive destination for EU residency and investment migration. However, with increasing demand, investors and expats should act early to secure their place before potential policy changes occur.
