The Turkish TV and film industry has experienced a remarkable surge in global popularity in recent years. With high production quality, compelling storytelling, and cultural depth, Turkish productions have not only entertained audiences worldwide but also significantly influenced tourism and foreign investments in Turkey. To delve deeper into this phenomenon, we spoke with Koray Özeroğlu, an industry expert and the founder of On Numara Medya.

The Rise of Turkish Productions: What Makes Them Successful?

According to Özeroğlu, the success of Turkish TV series and films stems from a combination of strong storytelling traditions and modern cinematic techniques. “Turkish productions effectively blend emotional depth, family values, and societal themes, which resonate with international audiences. The use of stunning locations and high production standards also plays a crucial role in capturing viewers’ attention globally.”

One of the key factors that set Turkish series apart is their universal appeal. From historical epics to modern-day dramas, these productions tap into emotions that transcend borders. “The shared human experience—love, ambition, betrayal, and resilience—is at the core of our storytelling,” Özeroğlu explains.

Boosting Tourism Through the Silver Screen

Turkey’s rich historical and cultural landscape has long been a focal point for international productions. Films such as James Bond: Skyfall and Inferno showcased Istanbul’s breathtaking scenery, while TV dramas like Rise of Empires: Ottoman have introduced millions of global viewers to Turkey’s historical sites.

“The impact of Turkish TV series on tourism is undeniable,” Özeroğlu states. “Many viewers, after watching their favorite shows, are inspired to visit the filming locations.” This phenomenon, often referred to as screen tourism, has led to a surge in international visitors exploring destinations featured in popular productions, including Istanbul’s Sultanahmet, Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar), Galata, and the Bosphorus.

Foreign Investments in Turkish Real Estate

Beyond tourism, Turkish productions have also influenced the real estate market, particularly among foreign investors. High-net-worth individuals from the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America have shown increased interest in purchasing properties they see in Turkish dramas.

“Many investors from the Gulf region and Latin America are drawn to the luxurious seaside mansions and historic properties showcased in our TV series,” says Özeroğlu. “The visibility of Turkey’s premium real estate on screen serves as an indirect marketing tool for the sector.”

Luxury residences in Bosphorus, Bodrum, Antalya, and Izmir have gained international attention due to their frequent appearances in dramas and films. This exposure has fueled a growing demand for Turkish real estate, with many foreign buyers seeking investment opportunities in these picturesque locations.

The Economic Ripple Effect on Local Communities

The benefits of the entertainment industry extend beyond tourism and real estate, directly impacting local economies. “A TV series production involves a vast network of professionals, from actors and directors to costume designers, set decorators, and technical crews,” explains Özeroğlu.

Additionally, filming locations benefit from increased business activities in the hospitality and service sectors. Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transportation providers, see a significant boost when a popular production is filmed in their area. Moreover, small artisans and craftsmen who supply traditional costumes, handmade props, and historical décor pieces benefit from direct exposure to international audiences.

How Turkish Productions Are Changing Global Investment Trends

Turkey’s entertainment sector has also positioned the country as a hub for international film and TV production. Streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and BluTV have recognized the value of Turkish content and invested in local productions, making Turkish series accessible to millions worldwide.

“These collaborations are key in further integrating Turkish productions into the global market,” Özeroğlu explains. “Streaming platforms provide exposure, financial backing, and opportunities for co-productions, which in turn bring more foreign investments into Turkey’s media and entertainment industry.”

What’s Next for the Turkish TV and Film Industry?

Looking ahead, Özeroğlu believes Turkey has the potential to become a global production powerhouse. However, to maintain and expand its success, the industry must focus on:

•Government Incentives & Tax Benefits: Providing financial incentives to attract more international film projects.

•Cutting-Edge Film Studios: Investing in digital production technologies, VR-integrated sets, and green screen infrastructure to compete with Hollywood and European studios.

•Regional Production Hubs: Expanding beyond Istanbul by developing major production sites in Antalya, Bursa, Cappadocia, and Izmir.

•Ease of Access to Filming Permits & Logistics: Streamlining bureaucratic processes for international filmmakers to shoot in Turkey effortlessly.

The impact of Turkish TV series and films extends far beyond entertainment. They have become a powerful economic force, driving tourism, foreign investment, and real estate interest while positioning Turkey as an international film destination.

With continued investment in infrastructure and global partnerships, Turkey’s entertainment sector is set to expand its influence, not only captivating audiences but also shaping economic landscapes worldwide.
